Ardal Svanenskiold ist ein abenteuerlustiger Tiefengnom, ursprünglich ausgeschickt, Verbündete im Kampf gegen ihre Totfeinde die Duergar zu finden. An der Oberfläche angekommen, schloss er sich zunächst einem Kloster wehrhafter Mönche an und hat dort seine Ausbildung zum Kata Master der ersten Stufe erfolgreich beendet. Doch Ungeduld, Wissensdurst und seine magische Affinität lassen ihn nicht zur Ruhe kommen und so brach er seine weitere Ausbildung ab und sucht in der großen Stadt Longacre nach neuen Methoden, seine Feinde niederzustrecken.

Da viele Gnome von der Bleiche betroffen sind, sammelt er zudem alle neuen Erfahrungen, die seinen in Isolation lebenden Artverwandten helfen können. Sein Sinn für Gerechtigkeit und die aufflammende Fremdenfeindlichkeit haben ihn früh seine Seite in der aufkommenden Rebellion wählen lassen. Auch wenn Loyalität nicht sein eigentlicher Antrieb ist, so weiß er doch seinen gerechten Zorn zu nutzen und ist gnadenlos bei der Durchsetzung von geltendem Recht. Dabei nimmt er jede Gelegenheit wahr, seine Kampfkraft in Kombination mit einfacher Magie zu verbessern und zu meistern, um eines Tages selbst den Kampf zu den Duergar zu tragen, um sie ein für alle mal auszuradieren.

Als er nach Longacre kam, nahm er Kontakt zur örtlichen Unterwelt auf, wo man ebenfalls nicht begeistert über die aktuellen Entwicklungen ist. Schließlich werden die Geschäfte der Gilde vom Haus Thrune geduldet und nicht weiter behindert. Er wurde entsandt, die lokalen Streitkräfte bei der Eindämmung der Revolte zu unterstützen und wenn möglich Informationen zu sammeln und sich bei Gelegenheit die Taschen zu füllen.
